Balinese dance can be divided into three interrelated categories, each associated with a different location in the village.

Dances involving masks are connected with temple worship. Dances of third category developed within the courts of Bali. Traditionally, pubescent girls performed the dozen or more dances in the Legong style. Today, while all aspects of the dance tradition remain intact, changes in lifestyle and increasing professionalism in the performing arts have led to women continuing to dance Legong through their twenties.
